Donkey Kong first appeared in 1981. Shigeru Miyamoto, creator of DK took inspiration from various other characters of the time including Popeye which drew Miyamoto's interest in recreating the dynamics of the relationships between the characters in Popeye.

Created by Tomohiro Nishikado and released in 1978, Space Invaders took inspiration from products such as Breakout, The War of the Worlds and Star Wars. It required customised hardware and software to be developed but became an extremely successful title that would help ignite the games industry.
